Event Details

A highly anticipated annual event, the Acoustic Guitar Spectacular brings together a hand-picked group of unique and original virtuoso guitarists from Australia & overseas.

7pm, Monday, 12 July

All Tickets $10

This series of very special concerts is hosted by internationally acclaimed Brisbane guitarist Michael Fix, who will be joined by unique tap-style guitar master, Chris Tamwoy, and Queensland’s own funky finger-stylist Sarah Koppen.

The concerts are structured so that each player will feature as solo artists, as well as performing as an ensemble, allowing plenty of opportunity for spontaneity and improvisation. Three players with such diverse musical backgrounds presents amazing possibilities, and incredible variety for audiences.

Each guitarist is known for their ability to entertain, and each present their unique music with a view to engage and delight audiences with stories, songs, and humour, (as well as fretboard fireworks!), making it a performance aimed for all people, not just ‘guitar aficionados’.

This is a unique opportunity to see three talented and original stars of the global acoustic guitar scene, together on one stage.

Free 1 hour workshops with the Acoustic Guitar Spectacular  performers will be available to people who have purchased a ticket to any of the performances.

Thursday, 15 July, Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre Playhouse Limited to 30 participants each workshop, bookings essential

10am – Learn a Torres Strait Islander Song with Chris Tamwoy
Learn a Traditional Torres Strait Islander song “Monkey and Tortol” for guitar and voice with Chris Tamwoy. Chris will also demonstrate his unique style of guitar playing and performance technique.

11.30am – Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop with Michael Fix
Learn the fine art of fingerstyle guitar and explore the mechanics of arranging popular tunes in a variety of styles for solo guitar. Michael has one rule: “there are no rules!” and this idea is reinforced by demonstrating thought-provoking ideas, tips and tricks. Michael presents his workshops in a breezy, humorous style, answering questions and addressing issues with personal anecdotes. As Michael explains at the beginning of each session: “we are here because we all have one thing in common – we all love the guitar! There are no secrets here – I’m happy to show you anything you wish to know about.”

1pm – Percussive Guitar & Live Looping Workshop with Sarah Koppen
Explore the capabilities of sounding like an entire band using an acoustic guitar, loop machine and FX pedals. Starting with the very basics, we will explore the different percussion sounds achievable on the hollow cavity of the acoustic guitar. We’ll then look into ways of combining these techniques with various guitar FX pedals to create a full sound.
